Fall is one of the easiest times of year to start young onion transplants. The summer heat has finally eased up, watering becomes more manageable, and most gardeners are clearing out tomatoes and other tired summer crops that aren’t producing much anymore.
Here at Schwab Family Farm in Eastern North Carolina, we start onions throughout the year — but not everyone has the same growing season. Many people find it simpler and more successful to begin their onion transplants once temperatures cool down and their garden beds open back up for fall planting.
